Orthodontic Tooth Uncovering

Many of our patients that are undergoing orthodontic (braces) treatment have one or more teeth that didn’t erupt out of the gum tissue. In order to help the orthodontist. The surgeon exposes the tooth and connects a bracket with a small chain to the tooth. The patient returns to their orthodontist to start moving the tooth into its permanent location so it can be align with the other teeth.

Why is Tooth Uncovering Necessary?

In some cases, a tooth, most commonly a canine, fails to erupt on its own due to crowding or impaction beneath the gum tissue. When this occurs, it can lead to complications in the bite and alignment of surrounding teeth. Tooth uncovering creates an access point for the tooth to emerge. Allowing the orthodontist to guide it into its proper position using braces or other orthodontic devices.

The Tooth Uncovering Procedure:

The procedure is typically perform in a single visit under local anesthesia, ensuring your comfort. During the procedure:

  • A small incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the impacted tooth.
  • In some cases, a small amount of bone may need to be remove to access the tooth.
  • Once the tooth is exposed. An orthodontic bracket and chain may be attach to help guide the tooth into its proper position using braces.

After the procedure, you may experience mild discomfort or swelling, which can managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Your periodontist will provide you with specific aftercare instructions. Which may include a soft diet, careful cleaning of the surgical site, and a follow-up appointment to monitor healing. It’s essential to follow these instructions to promote proper healing and ensure the success of the orthodontic treatment.
