Oral Biopsy

Oral Biopsy

If you or your dentist have noticed an area or spot of discoloration. A non-healing sore, or a raised bump on your gums or cheek – it may be time to get the area evaluated. If your dentist feels that there is a concern, they may refer you for an oral biopsy. A biopsy is when the surgeon removes all or a portion of the area in question and then submits it to an oral pathologist to be evaluated. This type of analysis will provide a definitive diagnosis so that new patients can have peace of mind and the dental team will be able to provide appropriate follow-up treatment if indicated.

When is an Oral Biopsy Recommended?

Oral biopsies are recommended when there are unusual changes in the mouth or gums that cannot be explained by routine dental conditions. This may include:

  • Persistent sores or ulcers that don’t heal within two weeks
  • Unexplained white or red patches in the mouth
  • Lumps or thickening of the tissues inside the mouth or gums
  • Abnormal tissue growths
  • Painful or painless lesions that appear suddenly or grow over time

If any of these signs are present an oral biopsy may be necessary to rule out conditions. Such as oral cancer, infections, or other diseases affecting the soft tissues of the mouth.

What to Expect During an Oral Biopsy

Oral biopsies are usually performed under local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. During the procedure, a small sample of tissue is remove and sent to a laboratory for microscopic analysis. The process is typically quick, and most patients experience minimal discomfort afterward. At Cams Periodontics We will provide detailed post-procedure care instructions to ensure proper healing.
